Academic Enrichment
LATIN PROGRAM
St. Philip Neri School offers as an elective an academic, two-year Latin course of study for 7th and 8th grade students. The classes meet from 7:00 am to 7:50 on Monday and Wednesday mornings for Latin 7 and on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for Latin 8. The students begin their introduction to Latin with a focus on common vocabulary terms and phrases, grammar patterns and making connections to words that have come into the English language from Latin. Introduction to the Classical Roman period and its continued influence in the modern world, the early Christian church in Rome, and the use of Latin in sacred music, prayers and the Mass rounds out the Latin program. The course text, Latin for Americans, 2003 edition, is a level 1 Latin text.
For interested students and their parents it is important to note that since Latin is an academic subject and it will require additional study, work, effort and time management. A variety of assessments are given throughout the course and letter grades (A, B, C etc.) are earned and reflected on the report card. Students who do well in the two-year program may place in Latin 2 or Honors Latin in high school.
The videos above are from the 2024 Christmas Concert perfomr PUER NATUS IN BETHLEHEM and the 2016 Special Donor Reception sing the ANGELUS. The ANGELUS included alumni wearing their perspective school uniforms – some in private, some in public schools. They were united in the spirit of song. Enjoy!
This program will not be in existence for the 2025-2026 school year.
